Faculty of Public Health Sciences

The Faculty of Public Health Sciences equips students with the knowledge and skills to promote, protect, and restore health at individual, family, and community levels. Graduates work to prevent disease, support healthy lifestyles, and improve population well-being through a range of specialized roles.

  1. Community Oral Health (COHO): COHO practitioners provide basic dental care at Level IV and V hospitals. They plan and implement oral health education programs, diagnose and manage common dental conditions, perform minor surgical procedures such as tooth extractions, and refer patients with complex cases to specialists. They also provide preventive care such as scaling, polishing, fissure sealants, fluoride applications, and temporary fillings.
  2. Public Health Sciences: Public Health Officers focus on preventing diseases, promoting well-being, and minimizing health risks in communities. They assess and monitor public health issues, enforce laws that protect health and safety, and ensure that health services are effective and accessible. They play a crucial role in controlling infections, mitigating environmental hazards, and mitigating the impact of issues such as substance abuse.
  3. Health Promotion and Community Health: This department trains Health Promotion Officers and Community Health Assistants. Health Promotion Officers design and implement programs that build health knowledge, address competing interests, and advocate for health policies. Community Health Assistants provide preventive, promotive, and basic curative services at the community level, helping to deliver essential health interventions and contribute to Universal Health Coverage.
  4. Nutrition and Dietetics: Dietitians and Nutritionists use food and nutrition to promote health and manage disease. They assess nutritional needs, provide tailored advice, develop and monitor meal plans, and educate individuals and groups on healthy eating habits. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and contribute to nutrition research and policy development.
