KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch Joins Yatta Campus Community to Mourn Fallen Student
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kelly Oluoch, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, joined the Yatta Campus community for a solemn remembrance ceremony in honour of the late Eugene Mutuku, a student who passed away on June 5, 2026.
The late Mutuku reportedly died in a road accident along Thika Road.
He was a student at KMTC Yatta Campus undertaking a certificate course in Health Care Support Assistant and was on clinical attachment at the time of his tragic demise. He joined the College in September 2025 and was widely admired for his kindness, humility, and exemplary conduct.
A sombre mood engulfed the Campus as students and staff gathered to pay their last respects to the 19-year-old, who was remembered as a disciplined, hardworking, and dependable member of the KMTC community. Eugene excelled in his studies, was a vibrant student leader, and was well-loved by all who interacted with him at the College and in the clinical facilities.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Oluoch expressed his heartfelt condolences, describing the loss as a painful moment for the entire KMTC fraternity.
“What has happened is beyond our understanding. We pray that the Almighty grants him eternal peace,” he said.
The CEO encouraged students to support one another during this difficult period.
“Do not despair. Death is part of human existence. It is God who gives and takes away at His appointed time,” he added.
Accompanied by Deputy Director, Academics, Dr. Nyawira Mwangi, Planning Manager Dr. Mutinda Mutuku, Administrative Manager Mr. Collins Ogutu, Isiolo Campus Principal Ms. Zipporah Kimanzi, and Head of Department, Nursing, Ms. Catherine Mwaura, Dr. Oluoch underscored the importance of emotional and psychological support for all those affected by the tragedy.
He noted that the circumstances of Eugene’s sudden demise have caused immense emotional and mental impact on KMTC students and staff, and affirmed that the College is providing support to them during this time of grief and mourning.
On behalf of the entire KMTC fraternity, Dr. Oluoch conveyed the College’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the Yatta Campus community.
“This is a painful loss not only to Eugene’s family but also to the entire KMTC family. We stand with you during this difficult period and pray for strength, comfort, and healing for all those affected,” he said.
The CEO further assured the Campus community that the College is fully cooperating with all lawful processes to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Eugene’s death. He noted that KMTC continues to engage the relevant security and investigative agencies, including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS), in the firm pursuit of justice and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Dr. Mwangi encouraged students and staff to remain united as they mourned their colleague.
“We have come to grieve with the Yatta Campus family and offer our condolences. Eugene was part of this community, and his loss is deeply felt. We pray for strength and comfort for everyone during this difficult moment,” she said.
Yatta Campus Principal, Mr. Mutua Kinyao, described the late Eugene as a disciplined, hardworking, and dependable student whose contribution to campus life and clinical practice was greatly valued. Student Representative Council (SRC) Chair, Ms. Lucky Mbithe, remembered him as a courageous, supportive, and inspiring young man whose memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
A postmortem examination on Eugene’s body has been conducted, and the family is preparing to lay him to rest on Friday, June 19, 2026, at his family home in Ndithini Location, Machakos County. A memorial service in his honour is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The College remains in constant touch with Eugene’s family and is providing the necessary support.
During the visit to Yatta Campus, the College Management also toured the Campus to assess the learning environment and review ongoing plans aimed at strengthening academic programmes, including the proposed introduction of a Certificate in Mortuary Science.
