Twin sisters turn a childhood experience into a shared healthcare dream
Twin sisters Sheryl Chepkirui and Beryl Chepkogei grew up in Uasin Gishu County, where they began their education at Tuiyobei Primary School before transferring to AIC Besiebor Primary School in class two.
They later sat for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations at the school.
In 2021, they joined Ndalat Gaa Girls Secondary School in Nandi County, where their shared dream of working in healthcare continued to grow.
Their journey to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) began through social media and conversations with friends who were already studying at the College.
“I kept seeing KMTC on TikTok and hearing about it from friends,” Sheryl recalls.
“The more we learned about it, the more we felt it was where we belonged,” she adds.
Among the more than 100 courses offered at KMTC, Occupational Therapy stood out for both sisters.
Their interest in the course was deeply personal.
Growing up, the twins lived closely with a cousin who had cerebral palsy. Watching the challenges he experienced left a lasting impression on them.
“We saw the challenges he faced, and it was really tough,” Beryl recalls.
“It made us want to help him and other people going through similar experiences,” she continues.
When the March 2025 intake was announced, the sisters carefully reviewed the available courses. Their search ended when they discovered Occupational Therapy.
“When we learned that the course focuses on helping people live meaningful and independent lives despite physical, mental or developmental challenges, we knew this was it,” Sheryl says.
What they love most about the course is the opportunity to improve people’s lives through practical care, rehabilitation and support.
Being twins has also shaped much of their journey.
“Growing up as twins has been a blessing,” Sheryl says. “We have always supported and motivated each other.”
The identical twins sometimes revise together, while also respecting their different study styles.
This has helped them maintain a healthy balance between teamwork and individual growth.
Life at KMTC Mbuvo Campus
At KMTC Mbuvo Campus, the sisters describe their experience as remarkable.
“We have gained both knowledge and practical skills,” Sheryl says.
For them, campus life includes lectures, examinations and the journey towards becoming compassionate healthcare professionals.
Looking ahead, the duo sees a future filled with purpose.
“After graduation, I see myself working in hospitals and rehabilitation centres, helping people regain their independence,”
Sheryl says.
“I also hope to explore areas such as paediatrics, neurology or community-based rehabilitation,” she adds.
The sisters would be happy to work side by side one day.
They are also open to pursuing different professional paths, provided they continue to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
Their advice to fellow students comes from their own experience.
“Stay focused and choose a course you are truly passionate about,” Sheryl says.
“Success comes with hard work and consistency,” Beryl adds.
