KMTC ACADEMIC COUNCIL CHARTS A BOLD PATH FOR STRATEGIC VISION AND INSTITUTIONAL EXCELLENCE
In a significant move to strengthen academic leadership and enhance the quality of training at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Principals from various campuses gathered in Nairobi for a four-day academic council forum. The meeting, which commenced on March 24, 2025, at the KMTC Nursing Hall, served as a platform for key discussions on academic policies, institutional growth, and strategies to improve teaching and learning across the College.
One of the major highlights of the event was the election of new officials to represent the principals in various forums, a process aimed at fostering leadership continuity and strengthening governance within KMTC.
During the election, Eldoret Campus Principal, Mr. Daniel Kimwetich, was elected as the new Chairperson, taking over from Mr. Ezekiel Kandagor of Kabarnet Campus. Mr. Tom Oogo of Nyamache Campus was named Deputy Chairperson, while Ms. Evelyne Abuga from Manza Campus took up the role of Secretary-General. Other officials elected included Mr. Festus Lwambi of Port Reitz Campus as Organizing Secretary, Mr. Samuel Njagi from Meru Campus as Vice Secretary, and Mr. David Omoit from Chwele Campus as Treasurer. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Kimwetich expressed deep gratitude for the confidence placed in him, reaffirming his commitment to driving progress across all KMTC campuses. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, open dialogue, and innovation in strengthening academic leadership and ensuring excellence in medical training.
The Academic Council plays a crucial role in KMTC, bringing together the Management team, Heads of Academic Department, campus principals and student representatives, to deliberate on policies, strategies, and initiatives that enhance the institution’s academic programs. With a mandate to oversee teaching and learning, research, and compliance with training standards, the Council ensures that KMTC remains a leading institution in healthcare training.
Speaking during the meeting, KMTC Board Chairperson, Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting the academic leadership in delivering quality training. He was accompanied by Board Directors Ms. Eunica Karanja, Ms. Hardlyne Lusui, Eng. Joseph Atonga, and Mr. Paul Cheboi, who collectively called on the principals to prioritize service delivery.
Mr. Cheruiyot reaffirmed the College’s commitment to academic excellence, institutional sustainability, and ethical governance. He highlighted the strides made in implementing KMTC’s Strategic Plan, emphasizing key areas such as digital transformation, research, and innovation. Acknowledging financial challenges due to reduced donor funding, he urged increased collaboration with government and industry stakeholders, stating, “We must explore alternative funding sources to sustain our growth and quality training.”
The Chairperson called upon all members of the College to uphold ethical leadership, academic integrity, and accountability, emphasizing, “Our success depends on the values we embody, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to professionalism and excellence.” Addressing student welfare, he underscored the importance of mental health support and affordable housing, assuring members that “The Board remains committed to fostering a conducive learning environment for both students and staff.”
KMTC CEO, Dr. Kelly Oluoch outlined key areas that require focused attention, including academic quality, disaster preparedness, human resource management, and digitization. He underscored the importance of performance appraisals, staff welfare, and customer service excellence in achieving the College’s long-term objectives.
