KMTC celebrates 92 years of existence as it rewards best performers

KMTC has today June 21, 2019 held a Reward and Recognition Ceremony at the Mombasa Beach Hotel to celebrate the College’s achievements and recognize staff, teams and campuses with exemplary and outstanding performance.
This is an annual event held to recognize and celebrate major milestones in areas of governance, academics and administration. The event was held at Mombasa Beach Hotel and presided over by KMTC Board Chairman Prof. Philip Kaloki. Board Directors Mr. Mithamo Muchiri, Mrs. Ruth Okowa, Dr. Emily Koech, Dr. Evans Amukoye, Mr. Fred Wamwaki and Samuel Arachi were also in attendance.
The four broad rewards areas were categorized as follows: –
i. Academic: –
• research
• innovation/creativity
• new academic programmes
• student admissions
• departmental academic performance in Final Qualifying Examinations
ii. Administration: –
• long service (teaching and non-teaching staff)
• employee/team of the year
• resource mobilization
• managerial
iii. Governance: –
• campus award for exemplary performance
• principal of the year.
iv. Special recognition category.
Speaking during the ceremony, Chief Guest Prof. Kaloki noted that “KMTC is proud of being the oldest State Corporation established by an Act of Parliament, entrusted with the role of training various disciplines in the health sector to serve the interests of East Africa and beyond”. He added that “since inception in 1927, KMTC has consistently produced health professionals to fill the human resource for health gaps in Kenya and beyond. In the last five years alone, KMTC released 48, 649 graduates to the job market”.
KMTC currently releases more than 10,000 graduates annually to support UHC and plans to produce over 50,000 graduates in the next five years to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s agenda of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all Kenyans by 2022. KMTC currently accounts for over 85% of the local mid-level health workforce.
Ag. Deputy Director (Finance and Administration) Dr. Kelly Oluoch, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, said “KMTC has in the recent past introduced new programmes in Family Health for Clinical Officers and Family Nursing for Nurses, aligned to UHC and has put in place quality management systems to enhance quality of teaching and training”.
It was also noted that as a result of the College’s robust marketing strategy and strong brand name, KMTC surpassed its set admission target recording more than 100% in new enrollments. In the 2018/ 2019 academic year that began from September 2018 through July 2019, 12,942 students were admitted to the College’s 67 Campuses spread across the country. In the last 92 years that KMTC has been in existence, this current year recorded the highest number of admissions ever in its history. As a result of growth in admission numbers, the College’s total population stands at 35,000.
KMTC embarked on a transformative agenda to increase accessibility in training opportunities in the health care sector by starting campuses across the country. KMTC trainees are today offering services in all parts of the country.
The training of students in KMTC is structured in such a way that that the trainees interact with the community at the lowest level of the health care delivery systems. To this extent, the presence of KMTC is felt all over the country. The College has also conducted several medical camps and disaster response, to offer free treatment, diagnosis, advice and referrals.
