KMTC Represented at the African Ophthalmology Council and WHO Steering Group on Global Eye Health

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) will be represented at the African Ophthalmology Council’s upcoming Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 26 to 29.

Additionally, KMTC has a presence in the newly formed 15–20-member steering group, on Global Eye Health Research, established during the World Health Organization (WHO) resolutions at the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2024.

This steering group will focus on creating an agenda that includes eye health systems and policy research, technological innovation for affordable eye care, and surveillance to enable cross-country comparisons for monitoring global progress.

Dr. Nyawira Mwangi, KMTC’s Deputy Director (Academic), will join both teams which have international reach, and include members from prestigious institutions worldwide.

“I am excited to join these teams. The appointment is a recognition of my work and the impact of KMTC,” Dr. Mwangi said.

KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch congratulated Dr. Mwangi, noting that the College looks forward to leveraging this opportunity.

“The appointment demonstrates that KMTC’s role in training a highly skilled workforce to address eye care is recognized worldwide,” he said.

Dr. Oluoch added that KMTC offers various courses on eye care, including Optometry, Ophthalmology, and Cataract Surgery.

He emphasized that this selection provides an excellent opportunity for KMTC to showcase its training expertise on a global stage.

“Consequently, we will continue to attract partnerships and students from various parts of the world. This will ultimately make us a globally competitive institution in research, training, and consultancy services,” he said.

The WHA is the decision-making body of the WHO, while the African Ophthalmology Council is the leading body addressing ophthalmology issues on the African continent.
