President Ruto Leads Government Institutions for Tree Growing for a Greener Future

H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, on July 13, 2024, led government and non-governmental institutions in the 7th edition of a collective effort for a tree planting and growing exercise at Kaptagat Forest, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The President was accompanied by his Deputy, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Hon Musalia Mudavadi, Parastatal Heads, and other dignitaries.

In his address during the event, Dr. Ruto emphasized the urgent need for all levels of government to embrace the cause of tree planting.

“From the ward to the national level, we must stand united in our mission to plant and nurture trees across our beloved country,” he said.

President Ruto led by example by planting the first tree. Following him, government officials, representatives from non-governmental organizations, and staff and students from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Eldoret and Iten Campuses joined the effort.

A total of 10,000 trees were planted.

Later, the President distributed 300,000 avocado and coffee seedlings to area residents.

In December 2022, the government initiated the planting of 15 billion trees by 2032, a move aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions, stopping and reversing deforestation, and restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative.

KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch, addressing students after the event, emphasized the importance of balancing academic excellence with personal growth and encouraged students to explore various opportunities available on Campus.

The CEO praised the discipline, calmness, and focus of the KMTC students during the recent unrest in the country.

Dr. Oluoch highlighted the significance of being well-rounded individuals and how participation in extracurricular activities can enhance skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management.

Furthermore, he commended the College Principals for their dedication to fulfilling the government initiative of planting trees, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability and collective responsibility in achieving such goals.

Dr. Kelly Oluoch expressed gratitude for their commitment and urged everyone to continue supporting this crucial endeavor.
